People are often surprised at the simple steps you can take to keep ants at bay both before and after you call in professional help from Tiger Termite and Pest Control. Ant prevention comes down to three basic premises: clean, lock, and maintain.
CLEAN IT UP
It is deceptively simple, but cleaning up after you cook and eat is the best prevention. Ants are attracted to the crumbs and grease leftover on surfaces from both cooking and eating. It might being surprising to realize that cleaning up your table, kitchen counters, floors and sinks may not be enough. Cleaning up outdoor spaces like your patio and grill after use will go a long way in keeping ants away from your home or office.
LOCK IT DOWN
Ants are attracted to food sources, so limiting those food sources will help you keep a handle on any ant problem. You can lock down your home or office by applying weather stripping to all doors and windows and silicone caulking to any cracks in the walls, around pipes, sinks and outlets. Do not forget to inspect your baseboards and cupboards for potential cracks as well.
Don’t forget to lock down any garbage as well. Overflowing garbage is like a welcome mat to many ants, so keeping the area clean with lids firmly on your bins or cans is a smart and simple way to prevent attracting ants to the area. Also, make sure to rinse out recyclables before putting them in the bin outside.
Regular maintenance of any building not only keeps it in prime condition, but also prevents pest problems. During all of your seasonal inspections, check the building for potential entry points for ants. Once a month or so, wash the garbage bins and storage area with soapy water to remove grease and sugary residues. After washing the garbage areas, walk all the way around the building to look for new hills, swarms or any other signs that an ant colony has started to move in.
While clean, lock, and maintain will not prevent all ant problems, it will greatly help reduce serious issues. And, of course, if ever you need assistance in ant control or prevention, Tiger Termite and Pest Control is happy to help
