California Pest Control Pros Discuss Cool Weather, Roof Rat Troubles

With the colder weather now upon us, many of California’s creatures are scrambling for somewhere warm to reside until spring. Thus, it is not uncommon for residents to begin to notice that their homes have been invaded by some of the Golden State’s most infamous residents. One uninvited resident that tends to show up quite frequently is the roof rat.

In California, roof rats tend to weigh less than a pound and grow up to 17.5 inches long. They typically have big ears, long tails and dark hair. Depending on the individual roof rat, its hair may be black, dark brown or dark gray.

Their nests tend to be above ground and near certain types of vegetation. Vegetation that tends to attract our region’s roof rats in droves are orange trees, Algerian ivy, wild blackberries, honeysuckle and avocados. Furthermore, the rodents are also particularly fond of nesting near walnuts, plums, pet food and grass seed. They often use that vegetation, fences, utility lines and other high objects as a means to enter California resident’s homes and businesses. Common indoor nesting spots include attics and ceiling crawl spaces, hence their moniker.

Determining whether or not a California business or residence has a roof rat problem is relatively easy. Getting rid of the agile rodents, however, is not. Clear signs of an invasion include the presence of ½ inch long pieces of fecal matter, puddles of urine, gnaw marks, partially eaten food and grease marks located along an attic’s beams. Californians may also hear the roof rats scurrying around inside of their hiding places.

Those residents that do encounter such disturbances should attempt to get rid of the roof rats as quickly as possible. That’s because the creatures tend to procreate quickly and spread disease.
